For the past year, Auckland-based, Yung Shottaz crew have been bringing their own blend of Zimbabwaen-influenced dancehall and hip-hop to the NZ massive. NiceUp talks to the Yung Shottaz about how they formed, what they're currently working on and their plans for 2009. The Shottaz crew consists of Ashford 'Swiss Dubbz' Magaiza(21), Kudzai 'Hlats' Hlatywayo(24), Batsirai 'Da Bem' Machakaire(21) and Max 'Amazin' Muvezwa(21). All of the crew are from Zimbabwe and we met in New Zealand at a few Zimbabwean social gatherings and soon found out that we had a lot in common i.e. sports, drinking (love of the green bottle) and of course a passion for music (especially dancehall)...so we formed in early 2007. Initially the crew had an additional member, Amin Payne (producer), who has since moved on to pursue his music projects individually.
We released our debut EP in July 2007 entitled Game Plan, which did okay considering the limited promo that was done for that project.
The Shottaz started working together because we felt that we could contribute to the dancehall scene locally and internationally. The Zim dancehall scene is quite competitive at the moment with artists in Europe and back home dropping mad tunes on a regular basis, so we felt inclined to add another element to that scene as well.
Versatile. A mix of dancehall and hip-hop, with a Zimbabwean twist!!! The crew is composed of two dancehall MCs, one rapper and one vocalist. We all have completely different styles, yet they blend very well when put together. We do tunes in English and Shona (our native tongue).
We've done some work with High Stakes Records, DJ Grafta and Regulus (UK dancehall producer). We're currently putting finishing touches on our second EP, The Premiere (a working title), due to drop early next year.
We've also done some work with Amin Payne and Racine on their upcoming mixtape.
In terms of gigs, we've been performing as much as we can from Auckland to Hamilton, Palmerston North to Wellington. At the moment, we've got no gigs lined-up as right now all our efforts are focused on the EP. We'll let the NiceUp crew know what's up when we do have more shows lined up!
In terms of dancehall, there's too many to list, lol, but some of our more significant influences include; 'King' Yellow Man, Shabba Ranks, Buju Banton, Assassin, Busy Signal, Sizzla, Capleton, Bounty Killa, Mad 'Snake' Cobra, TOK, Morgan Heritage, Lukie D, Luciano, Jah Cure, General Degree, Daville, Major E (Zim), Fortune Muparutsa (Zim) and a whole lot more.
Hip-hop influences include; Nas, Kardinal Offishall, Jay-Z, DMX, Notorious B.I.G, Fabolous, Tupac, Big L, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, Bone Thugs n' Harmony, Little Brother, to name a few...
We're planning to do a NZ-wide tour promoting the EP and after that we intend to start working on a full length LP.
Nuff respect to everyone who has been supporting us by turning up to gigs and showing mad love! Watch out for some new tunes which are coming soon (oh and not forgetting the EP)...'Yung Shottaz on a roll and we're coming this year, oh yeah!!'
RESPECT

Dancehall lovers in for treat this festive season
Entertainment Reporter
United Kingdom-based dancehall master Chris Goldfinger is billed to join a host of other international artistes like Tevin Campbell and Horace Brown who are expected in Zimbabwe this festive season.
Of late, Zimbabwe has become a favourite of many international performing artistes something that could be a result of the dollarisation of the economy.
The visit by Goldfinger to Harare promises fireworks as dancehall lovers will be in for a real treat. The legendary dancehall master is scheduled to perform at two shows one slated for December 18 at Stars Nightclub and another at Andy Miller Hall the following day.
The one at Andy Miller Hall is dubbed "Zimbabwe Reggae Festival" and according to organisers, Exclusive Events it is set to become an annual event.
At Stars nightclub, it would be partying throughout as Goldfinger together with his friends who include Highly Bless, Errol Silver and Bryan K from Dublin will share the decks with Harare DJs T Bass and P Styles who are resident at the joint.
The following day Goldfinger would then host the Cup Clash for top sound systems and the battle of emcees.
Featured on the sound system clash are Stereo One, Shocking vibes, Silverstone, Madhouse and New Generation while the battle of the emcees will feature Winky D, Sniper Storm, Badman B, Templeman and Junior Banton.
According to Rayldine Mhike of Exclusive Events, the two shows will give local dancehall fans top-drawer entertainment.
"We have secured everything from the work permits to the air tickets so we are not promising fans what we cannot offer. To show that we are serious about the show, Goldfinger will arrive on Wednesday ahead of his Friday show on December 18.
"My partner in the UK Blessed Kapesa will be travelling with Goldfinger and the rest of the team.
"Those who want Goldfinger to sign autographs will be able to do that before the show," Mhike said.
He said a welcome party would be held at Symphony, one of the popular joints at the moment.
T Bass, a one of the popular DJs in Harare said he felt to share the decks with a legend.
"Goldfinger has been the major supplier of music to Zimbabwe through the Goldstar label. So we are elated to host him this festive season," he said.
Only a fortnight ago, Goldfinger was in Gambia where he performed a number shows and as he heads to Zimbabwe, it would be his second visit to Africa.
Those not in the know, Goldfinger is a former BBC Radio 1 disc jockey who presented the station’s Reggae Dancehall show from 1996 to September 2009. His programme was produced by Tim Westwood’s production company Justice Productions, and Goldfinger frequently appears at club nights jamming alongside Westwood.

We would like to pass our condolences to the family of Daddy Distress who passed away last week, most may remember him for his long running on and off beef with Winky D ,but Daddy D helped local yutes set the trend of chanting on the mic back in the 90's as he was being groomed by Isaka(remember him the white rasta man) from African Exodus sound which was based in Chitungwiza.Daddy D as he was famously known travelled with the crew as a by that time he was about 15 or 16years old and he used to tear up the dance as he sang on the mic to various dancehall riddims like the punnany and the mud up lighting up romours aka agani centre, jobs, turtles and chitungwiza hall when the sound split he had a brief stint in jail for house breaking and when he came out he joined Stereo one international as an mc at the same time doing some recordings with various upcoming dancehall producers, the beef with Winky D started over a Winky D tune called zhing zhong which he happened to go around singing to the dismay of Winky d he also supported King Labash as a selector and mc on king labash's live shows he also recorded some tracks on the silver screen riddim with Way Out production which we will put on the jukeboxx this week....
Imagine having the tracks 'murungu ' by Sniper Storm,''mabhebhi emkusabhabha' by Winky D.'facebook by Kudzie Ku and more all on one mixtape well thats right the Chabvondoka Xmas Edition is coming and this will be mad juggling all the way from selector Slaggy Yout this one will betune after tune .hit after hit and its dropping early November 2009 on free download..........well if u have heard the tune facebook, amai hwee, robot taken from the forthcoming mixtape from Kudzie Ku titled 'Kupengereka' and you thought that was it well think again we have just sampled another scorcher taken from the mixtape ,the track titled 'madinga' and this time Kudzie Ku is cross and angry as he takes aim at artists who go around giving themselves titles as if they are the baddest in the industry ,and yet none of the fans acknowlege them,as he goes on to say titles are earned not just instated to hear this tune check out the jukeboxx this Friday as we unleash it to the public for the first time.....

Riddims to look out for this festive season are the 'dhindindi riddim' by maniac movement and this riidm will certainly get you up on your feet its in circulation right now and look out for a track on that riddim called 'kumanginde' taken from Slaggy Yout's forthcoming mixtape 'the bizzness',another riddim to look out for is the 'parktown riddim' created by Roki soon to hit the jukeboxx with mainly artists from Waterfalls and Parktown(Harare),hot newcomer Infamous G has pulled out another from his sleeves this time a riddim called 'mighty ducks' which is also in full circulation also look out for production from Syd Fresh's Top Shatta Records remember 2007 they came out with those massive productions which included Mega Spice 'zimbabwe', Dadza D 'chikosoro' ,Winky D 'butsu', and many more and this time they promise something far better than the previous production look out for previews in the coming weeks.....

One of Zimbawe's founding sound systems Startime Supa Powa which was popular with dub plates from Zimbawean artists back in the 90's which helped launch artists like Major E,Booker T,Rassie Ai,Big Silk aka Malvin S,has returned this time covering three countries Zimbabwe,South Africa and UK with the founder member Eddie Muffin in South Africa and selector Dickenz Guggunz running tings in the UK whilst some yutes take care of business in Zimbabwe this is bound to be one of the biggest sound networks to emerge outta Zimbabwe ,the return of Startime Supa Powa is being marked by a mixtape yet to be named which will also feature speacial from Zimdancehall artists plus the old dub plates from Rassie Ai,Major E,Booker t etc and jugglin of the Startime dancehall tunes so look out for more info on this...

On one hand, one hears stories that the “real owners” of the reggae group are ill-treating their lead vocalists while on the other hand, the founders of the group claim that they use their group as a training ground for young reggae artistes who are free to start their own projects once they gain experience.
Transit Crew, which has only three permanent members — Munyaradzi Nyemba, Samaita Zindi and Anthony Liba — is said to be in a quandary following the recent departure of Farai Kazembe, who had been providing lead vocals.
According to inside sources, lead vocalists who are mostly young musicians trying to get a platform to shine are pushed away by the heavyhandedness of the three founding members.
The sources further claim that remuneration is also another problem as the three get the “lion’s share” while youngsters are left with almost nothing despite “going through hell” at the band. .....read more

The saga continues for sure the month long accusation of racial attacks by Zimdancehall artists Sniper Storm and Winky D as reported by online media newzimbabwe.com after the artists had performed at the this years UK Zim Fest has led to another backlash from UK based selector/dj Jah Hanief, only a week and some days after Winky D came out with a song titled 'frame me' where he distanced himself from such acts and gave an open letter to the world,Jah Hanief has recorded a song the streets are talking about titled 'vanonyepa' voiced on the 'unfinished business' riddim it starts with a mock phone dialogue between Winky D and Jah Hanief then going to the chorus which goes like'vanonyepa, vanemakuwa, vanopenga havadi kuona vechidiki vachibudirira' you can sample and download the tune in the jukebooxx...

SNIPER Storm (Donald Chirisa) and Winky D (Wallace Chirumiko) are now friends! Believe it or not, the two artistes spent more time together during their “disastrous” tour of the UK than any one of them could have ever imagined.
After having exchanged insults at every given opportunity locally, including composing dissing songs about each other, their recent trip forced them to spend more time together, which resulted in the two artistes bonding and “falling in love” with each other.
For starters, the two spent 12 hours on the Johannesburg-London flight, stayed at the same hotel, performed at the same gigs, missed their return flight together before spending another 12 hours on a return flight last Sunday.
Before leaving for London the two had performed together at a show in Cape Town which had been organised by Winky D’s manager. Although, it was reported that the show was yet another “no-show”, no unpleasant exchanges were made between the two, actually “they shared the stage in peace”. ...READ MORE

CONTEMPORARY rhumba musician, Madiz — real name Itai Madzikura — has labelled fellow musician King Labash of 'Kukonzeresa' fame a "con artiste". He claims the fellow musician "disappeared" with his mobile phone handset, after borrowing it to make an urgent call.
Madiz says it’s now two weeks since the incident. The handset is a Nokia 1208, valued at between US$35-40 in Harare cellphone shops.
But Labash tells the story a little differently.
Madiz says he has lost business — he is "unreachable" on his mobile.
Speaking from Gweru, Madiz told city.com he had not expected Labash to "vanish" with his phone.
"Labash came to my flat on Tuesday two weeks ago, to make a phone call. He was having problems with his phone...read more

we mentioned another riddim from hottest producer Mockery called the compliment riddim, already voiced by many Zim based artists anyway there is a tune with explicit lyric's which we will from on call the 'poo' song this tune can only be put in the same categoty as Jamaica's Goofy 90's tune on the Filty riddim, but what puts this song in its own league is its sung in shona and its one of the filthiest song to come out this year ,we had the chance to sample that song at a party by mistake and as we tried to remove that song to play the next tune the crowd where up in arms and when we played it back the whole house was repeating the chorus, dancing whilst pointing at each other this was a weird moment trust me but this tune can only make you laugh out loud instead of skipping to another track just imaging a chorus with lines like
'aita dhod** , dhod** rake randishamisa, aita dhod** zimukonde seri kwemusha ' for more listen to tomorrows show 11-07-09 @ 16:00GMT

Dizzy Dee aka Desire Sibanda originally from Zimbabwe started music more than half a decade ago working with his local Triangle based Roots/Reggae sound system then called "Shutter Crew" as an MC in Zimbabwe Shutter dissolved in late 2002 forming two groups, Shutter Crew & Shutter Family, the Family became stronger than the Crew. The Family took Dizzy in as their official MC which brought conflict because during that period another sound system called Saxon Sound International led by Letcha T, worked with Dizzy as DJ and MC making it hard to take sides during clashes. 2003 saw the formation of the hardcore Dancehall/Soca/Reggaeton outfit and sound Platinum Vibes with Little Hero on the forefront and Soprano who was part of Saxon Sound. As an MC Dizzy Dee voiced on popular riddims during sound clashes and gigs which made him popular in the whole of South Eastern Zimbabwe. Later composing his own songs to feature on three albums under producer/engineer Rebel Child on the Maodzanyemba Records label in Chiredzi, making Dizzy Dee the first successful artist from Triangle, his town of birth. Moving on in 2004, Dizzy Dee met his challenge since more MC's and DJ's where chanting down on the mic, faster than wildfire. Dizzy Dee wrote and worked with Sheppy Lee, helping him to release his first album under the Creative Control label. Later that year Rebel Child & Dizzy Dee signed to the Kunta Records label owned by Tony Fresh in Chi-town (Chitungwiza) instantly releasing their hit single featuring Triple Pace......read more here

Did the lyrics of up & coming dancehall deejay Wasp cause the police to lock down a community dance recently? Wasp was reportedly at a popular street dance in the Grants Pen Community of Kingston on Sunday night (June 21),when a group of police demanded that the music be turned down.
Selector Boom Boom reportedly complied, but it is said that Wasp then performed and that really got the lawmen angry. While Wasp was on stage performing his hit single “Unfair (Officer)”, the police reportedly ordered that the event be stopped immediately.
Was it the lyrics from the “Unfair (Officer)” song that angered the policemen? Have a listen to the song below.

The Ziyaspora Tour 09 has been received well in Zim so far. We ve launched the cd with Spinalong around the country but mainly Harare and Byo. Ive done 2 Major shows at the Mannenberg and one at The Bulldogs pub with Alexio Kawara so far. Two more shows remain, one big one with SABC here in Harare along with other big bands like Victor Kunonga and Alexio etc. Ive received good reviews on the live shows we ve done and they reputting us up there with the big boys, the press covered the shows too and were very generous in their reviews. ths shows have been well attended so far and we ve been in the Herald on 5th June and they covered me and Zimdancehall affiliations as well. Ive also been on TV on Youth.com and scheduled for Good Morning show next week,One Ariega the song has entered the national charts at number 3 this week as well as Ndiye Mufudzi at 12 this week.
Ive made a lot of contacts while im here and will be glad to pass them on to all Zimdancehall affiliates who want to trave to tour as well.Ive travelled thru schools like GHS and PES to educate them on travelling abroad and careers etc to help curb the lack of knowledge some of us had when we left Zim, i ll be hitting more schools in the next few weeks. I have also a journalist doing a documentary of my movements while im here. I have linked up with several artists like Victor Kunonga, Nesto and Sam Mtukudzi as well as other less known artists. Have been unable to get to Winky D or Labash yet, but Mad Fisher showed me love so far. My advice to other artists wanting to promo music here is cassettes are still the main medium for selling music in Zim. CDs are great and they work just that the masses dont have cd players in cars and combies and homes etc where music is mostly played. Big up to all Zim Dancehall artists pushing the envelope and supporting each other as well as our movement. Will share all the contacts with you all when i get back to Ziyaspora

Just call him the hardest working artiste in showbiz today. Singjay Mr. Vegas, whose I Am Blessed single is still #1 on several local reggae-dancehall charts, is booked solid for a blitz of overseas shows over the next couple of weeks as the summer kicks into high gear.

Vegas will return to the island on Monday June 15th to shoot the Clearance Riddim medley video for producer Frass where his single, We Will Never, is one of the radio hit songs on the riddim which also
features the likes of Mavado and Bounty Killer.
He will then jet off to Trinidad to perform at the Sting Nightclub on Jun 20 2009 in the town of San Fernando. The following weekend, he will be at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex in St. Vincent on June 27th. He returns to New York to perform on July 1 at the Denim Lounge in Brooklyn.

Dancehall News special update - earlier this year we had mentioned that Buju Banton’s long-time love and mother of his five children - Lorna Strachan - reportedly filed a suit in the Supreme Court against him stating that they are no longer a couple and asking for division of their joint tenancy on several properties.
According to recent media reports, Buju had initially sought to fight it in court, but has now relented and settled out of court and in her favor. Zimdancehall update-as you all know the Zimdancehall awards 2008/09 where the first official awards we had to put together we started with an immitation idea but in the end created our own identity....this show proved that if people stick together they can overcome all obstacles, for those who came with good intentions of supporting their own artists i beileve they noticed some glimpse of the future of the movement, and a few who had come just to bad vibe the movement went home before the show started because they travelled all the way to Leicester just to get in for free for getting the promoter payed for the venue 'typical bad mind'...anyway the show started later than advertised as most artists and video crew and fans coming from London direction were stuck in traffic because of an accident on the motorway but that did not dent the confidence of all who were there..the show kicked of with an intro fro the versitile, full of charisma host Velvet Love Jones constantly reminding all those in that for a house to be built there has to be a foundation...he went on to announce the first act of the night Kudzie ku of maniac movement who was unleashing his debut album 'zviri sei' with the support of hot new act Walimbo aka muzimbo and believe me the album is something to look out for the only thing which really let the artists down was lack of stage monitors which we have now realised the importance of,after Kudzie Ku perfomance the presentation of best album was announced and the konzeresa riddim album took it with producer Jusa stepping up to collect his award capping a fine campaing for the konzeresa riddim which won him producer of the year in 2007 and best video for the konzeresa medley collected by Melvin C on behalf of Mr Zaine of Full Hundred production. To follow after was probably one of the best perfomance of the night in stepped Melvin C aka Jah melo dressed in a pin stripped navy suit with matching waistcoat he took the stage with so much energy with his version of the punnany riddim doing his singles then also using the randani boy riddim and the Jah creation riddim ,after that perfomance in stepped Maccix flo who had just arrived after the motorway delay and he stepped on stage having misplaced his original cd but had to do with some of Melvin C riddims with no hesitation the crowd was now getting in the groove with the fans on the balcony whilstling and dancing all the acts who came to perform were all buzzing to step on stage but we also had to make way for the awards presentation with Afro -Heritage getting best UK based band,Maccix Flo and US based Pinnacle getting breakthrough artists,Rassie Ai getting the cultural award,Kudzie Ku getting the best entertainer,Bonslag and Winky d getting best producer and best song 'ROKESHENI' for 2008/09 with promoter Tainternational stepping up to collect on their behalf,Alfire collected the best riddim award for the Snake bite riddim and he toasted it with a fine perfomance afterwards, the other acts who performed are Walimbo,Warhead,Slaggy Yout,S-rilla,Jusa and Fire flex who mashed up the place with his acrobatics....this event was an eye opener for all those who believe in laying a foundation this is the first event we have done at a spot not regularly used by other zim related shows and to see the turn out it shows we not alone anymore we organised the show with no help from no popular selectors or promoters and each artist played a part in promoting the show, setting up the venue connecting the PA system and believe me we were working so much that even Tainternational and Slaggy Yout had no time to change into their outfits for the night, arrangements for next years awards ceremony are under way and its going to be tighter....view winners here

We’ve highlighted in bold the Jamaican songs on the list, but given that some of the songs aren’t known to have been banned in the past, Dancehall News is not convinced this list is indeed authentic, and in fact it seems more likely that it is a prank / spoof (especially since some of the Jamaican songs on this list offer strong social commentary without the use of expletives and bleeps). Notably there are also some inaccuracies on the list, with songs being credited to the wrong artiste.....here is the list
| WHEN legendary dancehall pioneer Billiard Sinclair, popularly known as Jah B the Godfather, died in March last year, some prophets of doom thought his outfit Stereo One would collapse. But more than a year later, Stereo One is still going strong under Jah B’s protégé and successor — Etherton B (real name Etherton Mutemasango). Jah B, a Jamaican national had repatriated to Zimbabwe in 1982 after electing to trace his African roots, having met with his Zimbabwean friends such as Garikai Rukure, Andrew Mawere and the late Power Chitemere in England. | Sniper bemoans glory hunters By Richmore Tera TALENTED rapper Sniper Storm — real name Donald Chirisa — has lashed out at some dancehall artistes whom he accused of cheapening the genre by "burning" and giving away CDs for free in an effort to get mileage. "Most of them don’t have an official album. All they just do is burn and give away CDs free of charge and are after airplay in order to get mileage. "But I sell and perform my music commercially both locally and continentally," he said. Although he boasts of just one album, Ndakabata Mike, released in 2005, Sniper claims to be the best in the industry, saying he started his career way back before most of them had launched their careers. "If you put everything on the table of what an artiste has achieved, I will come out tops because if you see, all the tracks on my album were hits, even up to now. "I have performed at every corner of the country and I have been to most of the national galas apart from many other venues and events that I can’t even mention here," he said. Asked what had necessitated his long silence after the release of Ndakabata Mike, Sniper said he had been busy working on his soon-to-be-released 20-track album, The Voice. "It’s not that I am dead, as some people might think. I am still very much alive musically. "I was working on The Voice due for release end of May or early June," he said. The album carries the controversial song Mbanje, in which he extols the drug. Another song that has already ruffled feathers with his purported rival Winky D. Although Sniper explained that in the song he was singing about the virtues of a soldier in safeguarding and fighting for worthy causes such as peacekeeping and national sovereignty, the song did not go down well with Winky D. |

Bembe promoter and leading selector RICHIE FEELINGS says he will continue playing at the popular weekly dance despite threats from MAVADO'S crew,Thursdays dance ended after ALLIANCE selectors Foot hype and Boom Boom came on stage and disconnected the mic cause Feelings was playing too many Kartel songs.
When contacted by THE STAR yesterday, Richie Feelings explained what occurred saying, "last night mi deh at Bembe a play and a bag of man come in, but at di time mi neva see a who. A man come to me and seh Mavado in di building, mi mus big him up so mi big up Cassava Piece."
According to Feelings, minutes after 1:30 a.m., Foota Hype, Boom Boom and six other men came onstage and demanded that he stop playing. Feelings said: "Him (Foota Hype) stop di song and di whole crowd a look now, him grab di mic and mi hear one bag a --- (expletives). When Foota go pon di mic him seh him, Flex, Boom Boom and Mavado run Kingston 8, who nuh like dat s---."
But according to Boom Boom Feelings is biased in his musical selection "When we really look pon it a bare Kartel song, no Alliance song no play," he said. "Feelings too bad mind and corrupt; him need to clean up his heart. Mi play Vybz Kartel and Mavado songs. Mi play fi please di people and mi friends and dats what happen a Bembe. Feelings a play Kartel and frighten when him see wi."
Richie Feelings said he wants no part in the lyrical war between the two and does not play 'diss' songs from the artistes.
"Me tell dem dis, mi nah stop play. Mek dem come stop me," he said.

RETURN TO LIFE - the album from Rassie Ai is a remarkable masterpiece, its the sort of album that grows into you, ever since Chiwoniso Maraire's 'ancient voices' there has never been a Zimbabwean artist from the young generation of artists who has had an album with the potential of breaking barriers across the borders until now.RETURN TO LIFE if given a fair chance of support and marketing can be an album we will be talking about for years to come, the album is packed with well ochestrated tracks incorporating traditional Zimbabwean instrument(MBIRA) with modern instruments.Just like old wine Rassie Ai has matured and found the winning formula by moving om th hardcore militant dj to a more melodic sing jay but still delivering the same Pan Africanist sentiments.Rassie Ai is an intelligent lyricist built in the same mould as Jnr Gong,Sizzla, etc but h really bnifits when songwriting because he managed experience life on both sides of the world Africa and Babylon(The West) this can be noticed on tracks like 'Rise It Up' which is one of my favourite tracks and with the current economic meltdown it seems like a prophecywaiting to be fulfilled ,quoting a verse where he says 'lock up everyting Africa we no export no more, forget about the diamonds, forget about the oil' with the traditional Zimbabwean melodies 'ah he he ha' in the background dropping at the right moments, credit has to also go o the band and producer Kuda Musasiwa for bringing the best out of Rassie Ai.Other tracks to look out for is the ever popular 'Step Over Dem','Smiles and Cries' and 'Free to Breathe which can be a good sound track for a movie but overall the album is packed with hits and teachings, starting with track one 'Blue Steel' with a verse i also quoted 'i am the uncivalised, uneducated, unsofisticated, untolerated,i still make my move more hated,i still are make them call a spade a spade,i represent words ,powers and sound ,you represent turbines, powers and pounds' and ending with 'She Still Waits' on a one drop riddim tip,i could go on and on because evryday i discover something interesting about the album but to save me the burden just obtain your copy right now....review by Slaggy Yout on behalf of www.zimdancehall.com
Rise Again 2008 had high and lows as with any other shows, there were a lot of expectations this time as the line up was bigger and better, but there where changes in the way the show was organised as for the first time we had joint promoters(Cosmo Ent and A.B.R.A Records) who were willing to take the show to greater ites, that they decided to bring in for the first time a live band(ngoma) to back the artists and also invite Rassie Ai all the way from Ireland, but unknown to the Zimdancehall Administration there were some ongoing squabbles going on (Facebook)behind the scene with some artists not happy with the way the riddims for the show were been selected, some stating all the riddims where from A.B.R.A Records and they where not suiting their chosen songs, the overall promotion of show was a disgrace from day one with this website getting the flyer for the show just a week before show and most zimbo infested neighbourhoods not even seeing the flyer of the show,so the artists who made it to the show Maccix,Kudzie Ku,Dubbie Benzie,Rassie Ai,Jusa,Warhead, etc had to bild up their courage as they had prepared to perform with a live band only to be told the band wont be playing because of payments?the artists made up for the disappointments with good performances even thou their body languanges showed dissapointments,Mc Jah Hanief and D-Flex tried hyping up the crowd as usual but overall the attendance was poor, the artists absent for the show claim they notified the promoters before the show which meant they could have notified the fans who will be available to perform for the night so on behalf of the whole zimdancehall community we would like to send a big apology to all the people who were disappointed, all those who been writing emails on this issue just forward your addresses a complimentary cd will be coming your way.video for the show will be up by the end of the week....

WHAT the black man buildeth, the white man pulleth down?(courtesy of Sundaymail.co.zw)
Last Sunday we carried a BBC story which intimated that Bob Marley could have been inspired by a theme song to a United States television children’s programme. The reaction to the story was instant, and equally livid, especially from the rasta community, who questioned if this could be the latest attempt to denigrate the achievements of black heroes.
One reader, who requested anonymity, was angry at how there are attempts to distort the black man’s history. "That story is insinuating that a black man can do no good. That it had to be a white man who composed and what Bob Marley only did was to copy. That is ridiculous. How many of Marley’s songs were hits and where could he have copied all those hits from?
"And why did it take this long for such accusations to come out? If the theme song to the cartoon series was done in 1968 and Buffalo Soldier was released posthumously in 1983, why did we wait all these years to be told now that Marley might have copied? It all smacks of racism — that a black man cannot do any good."
Another caller also questioned why Elvis Presley, who died in 1977 of suspected drug overdose, is still regarded as King of Rock and Roll, whereas black heroes like Michael Jackson and now Bob Marley are being obliterated from the pages of history.
"Elvis Presley is still being worshipped in the Western world, yet they have killed whatever soul Michael Jackson had left. And now they are unto Bob Marley . . . but truth is they won’t win because he was above such trivia."
Ras Norma of Harare said Marley was a prophet and his music was spiritual, adding "there is no way he could have been inspired by a television cartoon series.
That is a mockery to all the rasta community and it really shows that there is an agenda to tarnish Bob Marley. It’s all coming from the white world.
That is utter nonsense, his music is like he is still alive today. If he copied Buffalo Soldier, why didn’t he copy all the other songs?"
History is laden with black heroes, whose names have been tarnished — all for the purposes of "a black man can do no good". One way or the other Michael Jackson, Marion Jones, Mike Tyson, OJ Simpson, Oprah Winfrey, Wesley Snipes, Snoopy Dog-dog, amongst a host of other names, have faced charges or have been derided.
Even in the on-going American presidential campaign, there are attempts in some circles to link black presidential hopeful Barack Obama with the Moslem world, a charge he has vehemently denied.
Though he was convicted, many believe that Mike Tyson was punished for being a black, and a successful black for that matter. He beat the pulp out of the brains of most of his opponents, and for living large, they had him spend a number of years behind bars. Many neutrals are of the opinion that the rape charges were rather trumped up.
Ditto for MJ, the best thing to ever happen to the music industry. His biggest album — Thriller — is the best-selling album of all time.
Include in that list the so-called King of Rock and Roll, and you have the exploits of Michael Jackson in context. Naturally this did not please those who do not see anyone black achieving anything.
"The only time a white man," observed one reader, "celebrates a black man, it will be for the good of the white man or simply because the black man will be toeing the line." Bottom line, nothing positive or good can come from the black world.
Man Guddaz, another member of the rasta community, charged that the Bob Marley allegations could be the latest attempt by the white man to tarnish the achievements of the black man. "Ye man, they are trying to do that but they won’t succeed, it is a futile attempt. Ras Marley was a prophet, he was spiritual and whatever they say will not make any sense because Jah won’t listen."
Some have gone to the Olympics, for example. Whereas Michael Phelps’ eight-medal haul in Beijing was largely described as heroic and history-making, Usain Bolt’s attitude in winning the 100 metres was described as egoistic. In winning three gold medals, Bolt broke three world records, but because he is a black man, there was rancorous disapproval of the manner with which he won the first of his three medals — the 100-metre sprint. He is alleged not to have shaken the hands of his opponents, something which was interpreted as being un-Olympic.
Could it be that Bob Marley is being persecuted now because he is a champion of black consciousness? According to wikipedia, Survival, a defiant and politically charged album which was released in 1979 with tracks such as Zimbabwe, Africa Unite, Wake Up and Live, reflected Marley’s support for the struggles of Africans.
His appearance at the Amandla Festival in Boston in July 1979 showed his strong opposition to South African apartheid, which he already had shown in his song War in 1976. In 1980, he was invited to perform at the April 17 celebration of Zimbabwe’s Independence Day.
Paul Kelly of the Bob Marley Foundation, answering to the charges of plagiarism against Marley, could not have been more to the point. He said it was highly unlikely that Marley could have heard of the Banana Splits, let alone be inspired by them.
What do you think? Is it just a conspiracy theory. Could it be that Marley was inspired by the cartoon series or is it a black-vs-white issue? You can register to pass your comments for every story www.zimdancehall.com brings you let your views be known..

Dancehall fans and promoters are voicing their concerns over last week's arrest of Sean Paul and up to 300 fans at the Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden for GANYA possession last Friday,Swedish police searched his hotel room going through his personel belongings when he was not present the day he was supposed to perform before they made th arrest which also included nine other artists and had loads of people backstage crying. But concert promoter Sharon Gordon believes there's a double standard for reggae concerts, and Paul may have been a victim of it. It seems like the war between Junior Reid and Buju Banton is no yet over ,Reid was quoted publicly as saying that he has forgiven Buju for the disrespect he showed him at the Best of the Best show in Miami. Reid was annoyed and upset because he claimed that Buju referred to him as 'Junior Greed' in front of his daughter Destiny who wanted to meet Buju whom she really admired. That was the real reason Junior got all upset and called Banton a fish.
A lot of people feel as if Buju should have apologized to Reid for his behaviour but a report in a weekend paper claimed that Buju had disparaging words for Junior Reid at Weddy Weddy.........
The album was part of a deal with ace producer Bobby Digital, who was charged with the responsibility of selecting the final copies of the songs for the album, released on VP records label. Unofficial word from insiders is suggesting that a mistake was made on the part of the person charged with the responsibility of mastering the songs for the final album cut.
Members of Bonner Cornerstone Music-to which Richie Spice is now officially based- have expressed outrage at this mistake being made; one which has sought to cast a negative light on the otherwise positive and uplifting reggae act. Bonner Cornerstone officials have categorically stated this will not deter Richie Spice and members of Bonner Cornerstone Music from their path of spreading positive messages of love, unity and strength to persons around the world.

What was once rumoured to be a misunderstanding between the Monster Empire and Bounty Killer, the leader of the Alliance, has now blossomed into reality.
The feud began at Pashion Sundayz between Bounty Killer and Harry Toddler a.k.a. Blonde Ras. From there it took a turn for the worse when the Monster Empire voiced a song on the 90s Rhythm defining the situation; ¿Nuh bowy (Bounty) caan juk out mi eye like Harry Toddler.¿ The song, produced by Suku from Ward 21, got the Killer cross, angry, and miserable.
It is said that Bounty Killer heard the song and got upset over the situation and immediately recorded a counteraction that targeted the Empire. Both songs have being getting crazy rotation on the airwaves and this has pushed the situation to a boiling point.
The Monster Empire have taken it to another level as they have outright called Bounty Killer name in a song that was voiced on the Unfinished Business Rhythm, produced by TJ (TJ Records). Monster Empire plans to be the hottest dancehall group leading into the summer and have began recording a plethora of songs.
The question is, will Harry Toddler from Scare Dem Crew defend himself, as it is stink in the streets that he¿s a coward.
The self proclaimed gangsta for life Mavado's problems have escalated beyond the shores of Jamaica after he was denied entry into the United States, after landing in New York, Mavado was put on a plane heading back to Jamaica by the immigration officers in that country.
Mavado was recently given back his travel documents by law enforcement officers in the island who declared that he was free to fly, however the United States authority shared a different view.
Mavado recently turned in himself to the police after he was made aware that he was wanted for questioning in a shooting incident that took place in the Manning's Hill Road area in July of last year. He was subsequently charged with two counts of shooting with intent and illegal possession of a firearm. After posting bail, Mavado's travel documents were returned to him by local officials who declared he was 'free to fly'.......
According to a source close to the family Cedella Marley died of natural causes.
“She died peacefully in the surroundings of all her friends and love ones”.
It’s evident that the great reggae icon Bob Marley inherits his musical talent from his mother as she was also a great musician and author. Cedella released two greatly produced albums titled “Smilin’ Island of Song” and “Awake Zion”. As an author she had written two magnificent books about her son.
You can listen to Cedella’s songs on her Myspace.com/cedellamarleybooker
With a year of over the top accomplishments, Sizzla Kalonji has a great deal to shout about. His historical Sly and Robbie produced collaboration with Paul McCartney of the Beatles, Lady Saw and Cherine Anderson, entitled, "Nod Your Head," is just one of many productions that sees Sizzla doubling up with stellar artists. Since April 2007, his collaborations have included a heavy mix with Lil' Wayne called, "Reasons," that also features rapper, T-Streets.
Sizzla, Shaggy and Collie Budz came together and released, "Mad Mad World," on top of other collaborations this year that included tracks recorded with Ini Kamozi as well as the most recent release with Tarrus Riley.
The 'earthhday man' is expected to be surrounded by hosts of his reggae music contemporaries like: Capleton, Bounty Killer, Beenieman, Spragga Benz, Anthony B, Queen Ifrika, Movado, Chuck Fenda, Tarrus Riley, Jah Cure, Luciano, Sanchez, Elephant Man, Sugar Mnnott, Vybz Kartel, Richie Spice, Busy Signal, Lady Saw, Etana, Erup, Junie Platinum, Voicemail, Gyptian, Turbulance, Assasin, Marcia Griffiths, Natural Black, Spice, Bascom X, Monster Empire, Lady G, Louie Culture, Thriller U and the L.U.S.T. Crew.
Reflecting Sizzla's glorious year of success, this earthstrong also follows other Koch/DDMG/Kalonji Records, "Overstanding" album as well as four others including "Children of Jah" with PNR Label, I-Space (Greensleeves), "Rastafari" (Penitentiary) and "Addicted" (LGN Entertainment).
In a statement issued recently, CEO of Penthouse, Donovan Germain said, "I have been guiding and managing the career of Buju Banton for the last 18 years and the time has come for this chapter to close."
He added that having dedicated the last 18 years to building Buju Banton's career, taking him from obscurity to the pinnacle of international stardom, it was with a sense of pride that he relinquished the management of the artist, to move on to other activities.
Germain further stated, "First and foremost, I am a producer and after spending so many years on the road touring, I now feel the need to get back in the studio and get really involved in the production side of the music."
According to music news, he said this was a "mutual decision" which was long in the making. Germain pointed out that Buju Banton would be handling his own affairs under his Gargamel Music outfit.
"Buju is now refurbishing his studio and his entire operations, so he will be able to handle his bookings and all management-related activities." Germain said he wishes Buju continued success, adding that the artiste could feel free to call on his expertise whenever necessary.
Mavado was granted 200,000 dollars bail when he appeared in court this morning, but Deva Bratt who also had a fist fight with Munga Honourable had no such luck during his appearance in court yesterday. He was remanded until May 1st.
Both deejays are facing serious charges of a very different nature. Mavado faces charges of shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm, while Deva Bratt is charged with carnal abuse.
Deva Bratt, whose real name is Sheldon Smith has been incarcerated since mid February. Yesterday was his second attempt at bail. The police allege that on February four, a 14 year old girl who is known to him was walking by his house in Portmore, when he stopped her and talked to her. The police claim that he invited her into the house where he assaulted her. Deva Bratt has denied these allegations.
He was charged with two counts of shooting with intent and illegal possession of a firearm, based on an incident dating back to July last year. The artist showed up for questioning last night, and following the interview, he was thrown into a cell. It’s unclear at this time at which police station he is being held.
That incident took place on Manning’s Hill Road in St. Andrew. It was alleged at that time that Movado was a witness to a shooting there. The police had alleged at that time that Mavado and associates went to a bar on Manning’s Hill Road where an altercation developed with another man. The police claim that weapons were drawn and shots fired at the man. Movado had been questioned by the police, but was released without charge. Now it seems the police have got enough information to charge him. They have declared that the artist will remain in custody for at least another 24 hours....

According to the statement the cops are anxious to speak with both Aidonia and Vybz Kartel but prefer to do so in the presence of their lawyers - from there they should be able to explain freely as to how these weapons came about and if they are valid licensed firearm holders.
It was just recently that Aidonia got released on bail after he was accused of being involved in an alleged shooting incident that left one dead. And it was just yesterday that Vybz Kartel was freed of charges for using indecent language while performing at his own Birthday Party held at the Amnesia Night Club, Ocho Rios (Jamaica
The word "reggae" was coined around 1960 in Jamaica to identify a "ragged" style of dance music, that still had its roots in New Orleans rhythm'n'blues.
However, reggae soon acquired the lament-like style of chanting and emphasized the syncopated beat. It also made explicit the relationship with the underworld of the "Rastafarians" (adepts of a millenary African faith, revived Marcus Garvey who advocated a mass emigration back to Africa), both in the lyrics and in the appropriation of the African nyah-bingi drumming style (a style that mimicks the heartbeat with its pattern of "thump-thump, pause, thump-thump").
Compared with rock music, reggae music basically inverted the role of bass and guitar: the former was the lead, the latter beat the typical hiccupping pattern. The paradox of reggae, of course, is that this music "unique to Jamaica" is actually not Jamaican at all, having its foundations in the USA and Africa.....CLICK FOR MORE
